Question:

Can Phenergan CAUSE nausea?

I got the prescription from my OB because I have been having extreme nausea, to the point where I can't even eat. But whenever I take it, I get even more sick, and start throwing up.

Shouldn't this have the opposite effect?

Could it be pregnancy related? I am 34 weeks and 2 days.

I have only taken it twice, and I have discontinued usage, I am just curious as to why this could be happening.

  1. Yes, you may be reacting to the codeine.

  2. Phenergan is an antihistamine which can help to reduce nausea by decreasing gastrointestinal hyperactivity/irritability.  Although it is sometimes prescribed as a combination pill with codeine, which can cause nausea, it is usually prescribed as a single drug pill.

The oral form of phenergan is a relatively small pill, but when taken can cause irritation prior to its onset, just like eating food or drinking liquids.  Often, a doctor will prescribe it in 2 forms.  If you are able to tolerate the oral form, then you can try it first, but if you vomit, you then try the rectal suppositories, which don't require you to keep it down for effectiveness.

The morning sickness in pregnancy is related to high levels of progesterone, which causes gastrointestinal irritability.  This can sometimes be severe enough to require short-term hospitalization to allow for adequate fluid and nutrition intake.  See your obstetrician for recommendations.
