Can Rory McIlroy be the No. 1 golfer?
There are very few golfers in the world that appear like a storm and boost their rankings by delivering the best performances on different courses.
Rory McIlroy is one of the leading golfing personalities that have done this. He is at his career’s boom and chasing Luke Donald to snatch the No.1 position in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Since turning professional in 2007, McIlroy has displayed amazing performances and recorded top finishes.
His appealing strokes are similar to those of former top greatest players, such as Tiger Woods and Greg Norman.
Now, McIlroy has claimed their popularity and fame by becoming the favourite player among hundreds. He is passionate and committed to golf.
He currently holds the second position at OWGR and is the biggest rival of the current No. 1 Donald.
He plays on both the Professional Golf Association Tour and the European Tour. His impressive performances at both are amazing and appreciable.
However, at this stage, the most important question is: Is he capable of becoming the world No. 1 at this age?
I am not hesitating to declare the 22-year-old Northern Irish professional as the upcoming golf leader. The statement may sound a little premature at this stage because it needs statistical support.
McIlroy’s 2011 season was the most appealing one. He won the title of the US Open in June with a tremendous eight-stroke lead. It is again as interesting as Woods performances were in the past majors.
Winning a major, while being 21 only, is impressive. Similarly, if the victory is glorified with an eight-stroke lead, then it is not just a win, it is a lifetime achievement.
On the other hand, he played wonderfully and finished three World Golf Championship events in the top 10 in 2011.
His top finishes and unmatchable performances at the European Tour helped him to secure a runner-up position at the Race to Dubai standings, earning €4,002,168.
Now in 2012, he again increased the number of fans by showing massive scores to the world, on the leaderboard.
The youngest star currently holds the top position at Race to Dubai and has performed well since January.
He only played two tournaments at the European Tour and landed within the top-5 positions.
He was able to lead the scoreboard but due to improved and better performance from the rivals, he had faced a defeat in both.
McIlroy was aware of a chance to attain the No. 1 position by recording a win at the Accenture Match Play Championship. He was tremendous throughout the six days and cheered up the spectators.
However, he finished the mega tournament on the second position. His expectation to be the leader was halted by Hunter Mahan in Arizona.
Now, McIlroy is heading to Florida to play at the Honda Classic. The field is set and all the leading players will tee off at PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens.
He is in his full form. He has never displayed such amazing scores in the past, as he did in 2012. There are ample chances for him to be the world leader after this tournament.
As he has been delivering his best since January 2012, it is highly expected that he will continue the improved scoring in Florida.
The young rising star from Northern Ireland would be performing tremendous again.
The biggest objective is to win. All the previews are in favour of him and he is confident enough to fulfil the expectations.
His enormous career is about to face another impressive turn and soon he will be enjoying the top position at the OWGR.
