He must get past Lopez first.  I sure hope he can.

I would personally prefer to see a Nadal/Safin final with Safin taking the crown but a match with either would be very exciting.  Go Safin!

Safin can beat Federer anytime, however, Federer can beat Safin also anytime... Try to look at your crystal ball and see... but even crystal balls don't accurately guess the future... LOL

From what I've seen of Safin over the years, he can beat anyone including Federer if he brings his best tennis.  I think that if they are both playing their best it would be a great match.  I'd give the edge to Federer in that case but we'll have to see.  Safin was expected to win a lot of grand slams when he was younger until we found out that he tended to get down mentally.  

I'd like to see the good match between them with Fed coming out.  He needs a good fight to prepare him for a meeting with Nadal in the final if or more likely when Nadal gets there.

yes there is no reason he cant if he plays like he is playing .... he has alot of talent and when he plays his best tennis he is capable of soo much ... and if he keeps the attitude away there is no reson he cant win .... but beating fed is gonna be hard since they know each others game soo well

He sure can...Safin can beat anyone on any given day with his talent. First he'll have to get through Lopez, which I think he'll do in four sets. Safin has to play his best and hopefully we can get a match like the 2005 Australian Open semifinals.

it is possible....and i think Safin can beat Federer, he might, but i want Federer to win just b/c of his past 5 yrs. winning..it would be nice to see him continue his streak...but if it wasn't for that..i would want Safin to win

I agree with some of the respondent comment.  It's just a matter of whether Safin can beat himself and maintain high level of play.  If he can do so, he has the chance.  Regardless of what result, expecting he'll give Federer a tough time if they meet in the semifinal.  Can't wait that match as it is surely a blockbuster.

It's not a matter of who Safin can beat, it's a matter of whether Safin can beat himself in a match. Usually this is what happens and then he loses. He always tends to get so down on himself during a match and whenever that happens all his opponents has to do is get the ball in play and wait for the Safin error and subsequent outburst. Can he Federer? Sure he can but I have a feeling that Lopez will take him out before he gets that chance with Federer.
