Question:

Can Skunks and Ground Hogs Live Together?

I have a family of skunks living under my back deck. They are actually really nice and friendly animals. This summer there are two baby skunks who are living under there with their parents.

(You can see a video of the parents from last summer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI8YYWikHJ8 )

But this years seems to be a whole community down there. And just now I saw a Ground Hog walking in and out of the entrance for under the deck. I figured, if the skunks didn't want the ground hog down there, they would have sprayed in defense. But nope, they seem to be getting a long.

I am wondering if this is a strange event in animal coexistence?

  1. Apparently it is because both animals are non aggressive.  If you had dogs or cats under there, you would have confrontations, with lots of accompanying odor.

  2. It is not strange. Animals that don't look at each other as food often share shelter. I guess I'm not the only person with skunks living under their porch.
