Think of what overrated means. That is saying that some bands are not as good as people make them out to be. But have you ever asked yourself what makes a band good? Take for instance calling someone attractive. What makes a person attractive? Is it some kind of test they take? Do they get a card that says they are attractive? No, the only thing that makes a person attractive is that everyone agrees they are attractive. Jessica Alba did not get a blood test proving she is hot, what makes her hot is the fact that every guy thinks she is, and nothing more. This is the same with bands. There is no way to 'test' a band. You can look at how fast someone could play guitar, or how well they can sing, but is that how music is measured? If a band plays a guitar faster than another band, yet everyone says the band playing slower sounds better, then which is actually the better band? I hear all the time that the Beatles are overrated. This is not a Beatles debate, I just cannot think of another example. However, look at thier numbers. Isn't that what makes a band good? Sure some bands can play guitar or drums better, but if everyone agrees that the Beatles are better, are they not? Just like a good looking person. There is no way of determining which person is better looking, except for seeing who everyone picks. So if everyone picked a band to be great, how can they be overrated, when the only thing that makes a band good or not is how people look at them? Please try to fill me in with a logical explanation on how a band can be overrated?

  1. it's more of a thing of personal taste. people don't use overrated in the right way, i don't think. what they mean by that, i think, is that a band receives more attention than it deserves. it's not just the quality of the sound, it's the fact everyone is crazy about them when they do not have much originality. like the jonas brothers. people will say that a very mainstream band is overrated just to seem like they are cool & have interests in less popular, more underground bands.

  2. if an artist is aggrandised by their record company, management, the media and the hype is widely considered to be bigger than the actual talent or output of the artist...then they are what might be called...'overrated'.

    Art, aesthetics, beauty...all subjective.

  3. Bands can be over rated because people play the consumer game of buying whatever they were told to buy. Just because some record executive decides that some band is the next best thing and sells that to the sheeple, it doesnt make it great music. Let's take Weezer for example. Their first album was a smash. But no one bought their second album. So then they started making really poppy music again. But talk to any Weezer fan and they'll all tell you that the second record was the best by far.

  4. It's a personal opinion.

  5. wow thats long...it cant

  6. The way i see it is that its all based on someones opinion. When I'm with a friend i respect and i say "i like this band" and they tell me they hate them because its overrated it changes my thought of the band and now i think its overrated. its just the same as clothing, cars, hair... everything! Who ever said that crocs were attractive? i don't know but they much have been pretty convincing. so if someone that is looked up to by many people or believed by a lot of people, say a music critic and they say a band sucks then unless that band is thought of as extremely good by tons of people, then its considered a bad band because people don't want to stand out. everyone just wants to fit in, and no one wants to look like someone with a bad taste in music. I know i get stressed out when people look at the music on my ipod because I'm afraid of what they think. i guess what I'm trying to say is that: because we all just want to fit in (at least most of us) we just conform to whatever people tell us is the new cool thing or the next overrated band.

  7. Here's how I know a band is over-rated.

" A CRUMMY BAND HAS ONE HIT, AND FENDER GUITARS MODELS AN ELECTRIC GUITAR AFTER THEM "

like that stupid-lookin' guy in the goofy hat from Blink 182, or.  or that drug-addicted old wench Courtney Love from the band HOLE.

Then they wonder why the kids are buying IBANEZ GUITARS !!!
