Can Someone Tell Me How To Build A Home-Made Cockatiel Cage?

We have two adult cockatiels we got from a breeder, and they came with a cage. Before-hand she promise us a large parrot cage, which she didn't give us. So she gave us a cage that was designed for a parakeet instead. We don't have a large cage for them, and we keep them in there at night and in the morning, so it's way too small. My Mom can't afford to pay a lot of money for a cage, but we can afford for food and toys, and stuff like that. So I was wondering how could I make a large cockatiel cage for them, and it has to big enough or two cockatiels, and a little extra room for toys. I won't be doing this, adults will. Please help me! I can't stand them to be in such small housing! How can I make them a house out of scratch? And no poisonous stuff like lead and zinc. Please help me! Oh, and also, can it be easy to clean? I don't want them to get sick or anything. And if you have any ideas you want to share, go right on ahead! And can you give me directions on how to build it?

Here's my e-mail if you have and ideas or pictures of a homemade cage!

  1. make a simple box out of wood and staple chicken wire to it as for the easy cleaning my friend puts corn meal or something like it and vacuums it up.

  2. My husband tried to build a cage before, for a pigeon that had decided to nest in the bed of his truck.  It didn't work, and by the time he bought the materials, he had already spent as much as he would have on a real cage.

Try looking on craigslist in your area for a used cage.

  3. PLEASE do not build your own cage. There are so many things that are toxic to birds. Go to your local pet store and see what they have. I would say to get something at least 18x18x24 or taller. Cockatiels don't need a 'large parrot' cage anyway. Look on craigslist or ebay and at least find a used cage. And please look on the internet and find out what it toxic to birds. there are certain woods, metals and even smells that will kill them. I worked in a upscale pet store fo a long time and every so often people wanted those decorative bird cages you find in home decor stores because of the price. Those are decorative only. The companies that make those don't make them for birds to live in. It's ok if they are in a small cage until you have the resources to by a cage. just keep them happy and take them out as much as you can.

  4. holy molly....

What I know about bird can be put in your birdcage but I do know that your birds are very 'people' birds.

Go to your nearest pet store and find out what they can't be around.

I feel that a cage that they can go in and out of is the best. A very large one would not be hard to build and its just a tray that you can pull out to clean.

The 'bird' people will give you the best advise.
