Can Tiger Woods pass Dustin Johnson and Lucas Glover in US Open at Pebble Beach
The US Open Golf Championship was last played at the difficult tracks of Pebble Beach about 10 years ago and many a golfers as well as the US fans are keenly awaiting this year’s tournaments start which will mark the 110th U.S Open Golf tournament and this will be the sixth time that Pebble Beach will host the U.S Open.
So let’s go back and take a look at the history of the Pebble Beach course, to refresh everyone’s memory. Jack Neville and Douglas Grant were the ones who designed the Pebble Beach Golf Course back in 1919, with their primary objective being to place as many holes as possible along the sublime and beautiful Monterey coastline, located right on the California coastline.
However this was not their only objective, as this beautiful and scenic course offers tough and challenging conditions which over the years have tested some of golf’s most professional and talented players.
The first professional tournament held at Pebble Beach was back in 1926, which Harry Cooper won whereas the first major championship held was the U.S. Amateur in 1929.
However in spite of these gruelling conditions, Pebble Beach has been home to some of the world’s greatest exhibition of golf which at times has been both thrilling and unbelievable.
It is thus pertinent to mention some of the historic moments that Pebble Beach has enjoyed while playing host. We will of course start with the most recent moments that the all time champion of the game Tiger Woods has enjoyed here.
Tiger who was just 25 years old, when he first played here, managed to break or tied nine separate U.S. Open records with his dominant performance at the U.S. Open in 2000 which was the last time the tournament was played at this course.
Tiger averaged 299.3 yards off the tee, hit 51 of the 72 greens in regulation and never three-putted as Woods capsized Tom Morris’s record for the largest margin of victory ever in a major championship that was set in 1862 and thus with etching his name onto the history books as well as making a bold statement for the world to be on the look-out.
Anyways a lot has changed since then. Tiger Woods although still great is not the man that he was 10 years ago especially after his personal problems and a neck injury. Over the years many other great talents have also come into the sport.
So then who will be the undisputed master at pebble beach, we shall find out this weekend. Just a little food for thought, let’s review a few names of some players whom fans should closely follow this weekend.
To start off let’s focus on Lucas Glover who has some momentum coming into play this year's Open after his steady performance at Bethpage Black won him the 2009 U.S. Open.
Dustin Johnson who seems to have the Pebble Beach course figured out having won the last two AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Ams at the location.
Luke Donald has also been able to show some recent success having finished in the top 10 four times already this year.
Then of course we have the likes of Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els and Rory McIlroy who all seem to be top contenders for being the top golfers in 2010.
Then despite all that Woods has been through in the recent past it would not be fair not to expect the golfing ace to rise to the occasion; Tiger Woods is expected to come into this weekend extremely focused.
So then the stage is set, the grass is lush green, the calming sound of the waters awaits these great golfers as the sun blazing down on this paradise of a course. One can only expect the best golf to be played and may the best man win.
