Can Victoria Azarenka win the second straight Grand Slam in the French Open 2012 – Tennis Special
World number one, Victoria Azarenka, registered a 26 match unbeaten run at the start of this season to revive the glory days of women tennis when a single player was able to dominate the whole year. Back then it was the Williams’
sisters who shocked the world by their world class dominance on all types of surfaces. This year, it was the Belarusian tennis ace who crushed everyone on her way to clinch four titles on the trot that includes the season-opener in Sydney coupled with her
maiden Grand Slam title in the Australian Open; titles in Doha and Indian Wells.
At the moment, she owns a record of 35-3 and is bidding for her second straight Grand Slam title in the Roland Garros French Open. Women tennis was deprived of such dominance for a long period of time and it is a pleasure to watch
the 22-year-old Belarusian battering her opponent and giving no respect whatsoever to any tennis icon.
Amelie Mauresmo, the former world number one from France, is training the Belarusian these days and grooming her for the clay court Grand Slam tournament. On her arrival, she stated, “I'm coming into what is already a well-oiled
machine. It's like fine-tuning a race car.”
Azarenka’s French coach, Sam Sumyk, stated about her, “Vika is still a long way off realising her full potential. I think there are a lot of facets of her game that could still be honed – there's always room for improvement. Generally
you make changes when things aren't going well, but it's the opposite of that for us at the moment. Nevertheless we don't want to wait until she's playing badly before we try to get our act together."
Mauresmo was the choice of Belarusian who wanted to learn some new traits of handling pressure and registering comebacks in the difficult situations. Azarenka has always wanted to be like her idol, Steffi Graf, and this is her
time to reign supreme over everyone just like her charismatic idol did in her supreme era.
However, recently everyone has seen a major slump in her form. It is mainly due to the fact that she has suffered a chronic right shoulder injury for a past month and her recent withdrawal from the 1000 points tournament in Rome
is a clear-cut signal that she is struggling to recover. Almost a week is left for the French Open to start and she doesn’t have enough time to recover and if she fails to prove her match fitness before the tournament, it will be a major disappointment for
everyone who was eager to witness her in action.
She likes to play in the US Open and Australian Open because they are played on hard court. However, she plans to recover in time and make a booming start to the second straight Grand Slam title. It might not be her favourite surface
but the terror of Belarusian is good enough to help her go through with few initial challenges of the tournament.
