Can Warhammer 40k vehicles assault?

Probably a stupid question but I have just started playing and got/read the rule book and when it comes to the vehicle assaulting part it doesn't answer my question at all. It's possible to assume that they get one attack and could use one of their weapon's strengths, right? If not, when they have been assaulted do they just not attack back? Thanks!

A bit off topic but can you shoot at troops which have assaulted a vehicle, but not destroyed it, in your next turn?

yes u r right though if the vehicle is equiped with a assault profile weapon such as a storm bolter it can make one attack
