Can You Be In The Military With A Treatable Mental Illness?

Do they allow those joining the military who have a mental problem; treatable on medication? Are there any mental illnesses that you will not be allowed in?

A lot of people have some sort of mental condition that they use meds to keep stabilized so I was just wondering about that.

  1. No. They don't. The link below has a list of the mental health problems which preclude entering the military. You can scroll down to paragraph 2-27 and read them all.

  2. no. any current use of medication for mental illness is  disqualifying./  also LONG TERM treatment for mental illness is Disqualifying( getting therapy.help for six months because your dad died in a car wreck is one thing.  being treated for over a year is something else entirely.

Furthermore soem illness are a PDQ period, such as BiPolar.

you must be off all meds with a doctor's approval and supervision for a minimum of 12 months and function normally( finish school, hold down a steady job, etc) before any waivers will be considered.

  3. NO..

They have enough problems with PTSD and suicides and will not exacerbate their mental health issues by letting people in who already can not deal with life.

  4. Usually no - A friend of mine that wanted to join made the mistake of telling Defence Force Recruiting that he once had a bout of depression, and all of a sudden he's considered too unstable.

Any current medications would likely be a big no-no too. Besides the supply problems likely to be encountered on operations or deployments, there's too many potential complications.

  5. No, meds preclude your membership.
