Question:

Can You Help me figure out how much ham we'll need to cook up for our DIY wedding

We'll be having 62 guests who eat meat. How many 20 lb. hams will I need to feed these people? We're having a brunch buffet, so we'll have some breakfast casseroles, cinnamon buns and quiches along with the ham, so I'm thinking we'll just need a decent sized slice per person.

Any ideas?

  1. For a regular mid-week meal, I usually allow 4 - 6 oz of meat per person.  For a special Wedding dinner you could allow 8 oz of meat per person.

So, that is half a pound of meat per person, therefore, your 20lb ham would feed 40 people assuming that there is no bone in it.

Also the cooked weight will be less than the 20lbs.

Two of the hams should be okay, but if you buy a third one you would know that you would have more than enough.

  2. 1/3 to 1/2 pound per person is the guideline. So 2 hams will be fine.

Since it is a buffett, you may want to have a sauce with the ham to keep it from drying out in the chaffing dish.   May I suggest a Red Eye Gravy or a Maple Syrup Sauce to keep it moist.
