Question:

Can You Qualify for the Superheavyweight Class in Weightlifting if you're not a Superheavyweight by Weight?

I understand that in boxing, wrestling, judo, and taekwondo they are separated for the safety of the smaller competitors cuz they are competing head to head.

But in weightlifting you are not going head to head against your opponent. There is no physical altercation involved,

So assuming someone who weighs like 80 kg manages to qualify under the superheavyweight by lifting the superheavyweight weights would he be allowed to compete with the superheavyweights?

  1. This is a good question, and you are right, if somebody can lift that sort of weight then why couldn't they be allowed to compete at a "higher" level ? seriously I am not taking the proverbial here I think this is a good question.

  2. With nothing but supposition to guide me, I think that you can compete in a weight division ABOVE but not BELOW the one you are classed in, as you are perceived to gain no advantage by doing so.
