  1. You can do severe damage to the eyes by looking at the sun during an eclipse.  The eclipse, per se, does not cause the problem.  The problem is caused by looking at the sun and thinking that the eclipse should reduce the amount of light reaching the eye so that no damage happens.

The best preventative is looking at the eclipse through welder's glasses.  Or, you can create a pin hole camera and look at the eclipse projected onto a piece of paper.

  2. Yes you can.  You can use a welding helmet with at least a #10 filter or you can make a viewing box to look at it like I did in 7th grade.  Here's a link to some plans:

  3. yes, you can.... the sun's light is so intense, even if a lot of it is blotted out, that it can burn your retina.... remember taking a magnifying glass and burning leaves & wood from the sun's light?  That's just what the lense in your eye does to your retina.

The safest way of looking at an eclipse is taking a big piece of card board, and poking a hole in the middle of it (about 1/2 the size of a pencil), and holding it about 2 feet over the sidewalk or a big piece of paper.  The image of the eclipse will be refracted onto the surface of the sidewalk or paper.

  4. Yes, you can if you look directly at the sun.  There is special fogged glass and plastic that you can look through to see the eclipse and to protect your eyes.

  5. Only through special filters, or by projecting the image onto a blank area. Looking at the sun will cause damage, especially just before and after the eclipse. The light level is lower, so the pupil will open wider, but the intensity of the light energy is enough to severely damage your retina, or even blind you.

  6. of course you can look at it, if you do it properly. the cheapest, most generally idiot-proof way to view the partial phases is with a pinhole camera.

  7. Looking directly at the Sun at anytime for any amount of time will damage your eyes.
