Does it matter what country your crystals come from?

  2. You often hear gemstones being described according to their country of origin.  Certain regions have become renowned for producing especially high quality gemstones.  Examples are Colombian emeralds, Burmese rubies, Ceylon (Sri Lankan) Sapphires, etc.

    In all of these cases, the name of origin actually refers to the color of the gemstone. For example, Burmese rubies are known for their particular bright shade of red.

    The truth is that not all rubies from Burma (Myanmar) are that color, and there are bright red rubies that are from other countries as well.

    So actually, it has become tradition to use the "country of origin" to describe the COLOR.  The stone may or may not really come from that country.

    And therefore, it does make a difference.  For example, a ruby listed as "Burmese" will usually be more expensive than a ruby listed as "Indian" or "African."
