Question:

Can a 1000fps pellet rifle using .177 cal airgun pellets kill a raccoon

I have a Big raccoon problem, 5 or 6 a night scratching my door up. I cant use a real rifle because of noise (They come in the middle of the night). I do have a rather quiet breakbarrel pellet rifle that advertises 1000fps. I also have .177 cal airgun pellets. So, can my gun kill a raccoon with it and if yes where do I shoot it?

  1. Survey says, yes it can. OK... Now that that's out of my system. It should kill the raccoon provided you place your shot properly (in a vital areal such as the heart/lung cavity). However since raccoon are large animals you'd probably be much better off using a .22 (or larger) airgun since they're more likely to get sufficient penetration.

  2. .22, it is quiet and has the power to punch through.

  3. Ya you CAN TOO kill it. But you need to hit its vitals. Try shooting it right behind the front legs.

Dont try shooting its face,... if your going for a headshot, shoot it into the ear. Raccoons DO have thick heads, but that one you shot, it probabely didnt hit, or it walked a little and died. Try looking for it in the morning around your yard. Bring your gun just in case...

And did you ever try getting some poison, mix it with canned cat food, and leave it by your door? If you do that make sure you watch and make sure the raccoon, and no other animal eats it.

OR The best thing to do is buy a metal live trap. They are like $50 but work great. This way you dont kill it (hence "Live" trap) And you have no worries of kill ing somethingg else. Once its trapped you can shoot it or realese it somewhere else....

    Be safe.

  4. them things are tough little critters. I had a pellet gun, and my dog treed a coon, so i shot it and it fell out of the tree, and started running. I shot it a few more times, and it still kept running.  I ended up having to take the butt of the rifle, and hit him in the back of the head, killing him instantly.

Im sure, if you had a perfect head shot, it would be a different story.

But I would take a .22 just to be sure.

  5. yes shoot is right behind the frount leg this will hit it in the lungs and hart puting it down humanly

  6. get a .22 and use sub sonic rounds.

  7. my bro killed a racoon with a bb gun .177 cal i dont think it was 1000fps it was less but you can kill it for sure shoot it behind the 2 legs the upper part thats the heart you should kill it after a couple shots my bro shot it like 5-10 times until it died but good luck with them

  8. yes i have watched a hunting show where a gamo extreme took down a wild bore a big animal if you've ever seen one but if i were you i would use gamo pba raptors (pellets) might bump your gun up to 1300fps

                                                     good hunting.

                                                                     domenic

p.s. if you still have a problem hammer nails in a few peices of wood, the cove them with leaves, now you'll need a good 1'x1' square (not a parameter but about 4 pieces of wood together now put food in the middle.........now clean the blood in the morning : ) e mail me for a diagram

  9. without a doubt. shoot them in the head.

  10. paint balls are effective as a 'behavior change' aid, however, if coons become familiar with your back porch as a food source, they will require repeated treatments...remember, the paint ball leaves the barrel at only about 300  fps, although you might be able to increase the effect of the ball on the animal by freezing the ball before use...this in not a lethal combo, but it might convince the animal to leave...a 177 in an air gun is going to be marginal at best, no matter where you shoot them-if noise is your main concern, try some subsonic .22 rounds, they are very effective, and not very loud, also, a small crossbow, or archery tackle are both other options...I live in an area of 1 acre lots, and have 'no kill' neighbors, who actually leave food out for the pests-I have singlehandedly rid the neighborhood of every varmint around, with archery tackle, 40 lb draw whitetail hunter, bought at a yard sale for 10 bucks, leftover arrows with small game tips-very lethal, very silent...steel traps are another idea, but remember, raccoons are not very happy when trapped-moving them even in a trap can be hazardous to your health, where I live they are prone to rabies-kill them it is safer for you...good luck, and be safe.

  11. shoot it 3 times at least in the head.If they still are alive then you have terrible accurecy or your guns weak.

  12. No you can not kill a racoon with only a 1000 fps pellet rifle. A .22 takes care of them with no problem but the largest sized animal you can take down with a pellet rifle is only like a medium sized rabbit. Do not shoot the racoon again it will just hurt him.

And never listen to the people who tell you to shoot the racoon in the face you never shoot an animal in the face you always shoot them in the vitals. Its almost common sense to know that.....
