I am 16 and really need a job. My only prior experience has been babysitting on a regular basis for 2 years. I applied at so many places, maybe 50, and nobody will hire me. I had 2 interviews and they asked my name, age, and school and said they would call back. It is very frustrating because there is no way I can gain experience if nobody will hire me. I applied at retail stores and restaurants mainly, and fast food.

I think tomorrow I am going to go through the yellow pages and call every single restaurant, store, florist, daycare, nursing home, bouncy place, arcade, toy store, movie theater, etc. in my city/area.

I was wondering if it was possible for me to find a job at an office at my age, maybe to do filing, receptionist work, or other light stuff like that. I was thinking about calling legal offices, business offices, travel agencies, hotels, etc. to see if they had work I could do. Can I find a job like this? If so, how do I go about it? Email, phone, walk in, etc?

  1. Why not start a little business? A little business experience goes a long way at this age. You can easily waste a lot of time with those jobs, and chances are you will not learn a lot.

  2. May be if u have some connections. But i recommend start low buddy.

  3. Go to a temp agency in your area (Manpower, OfficeTeam, etc)  and see what they can do for you as far as an office position

  4. Its possible to find an office job,  but not likely. Most places like that are looking for someone permanent and full time. A lot of retail places won't hire unless you're 18, don't know why really. Your best bet is probably fast food, daycare, grocery stores, etc.

  5. At 16, it's sometimes hard to get experience. Most offices are looking for someone that is full time and can help out after school starts up again. However, one thing that I did when I was 17 was go to a temporary hiring agency and worked as a file clerk for them. It also helps if you know how to type fast (over 30 wpm.) Arcades and movie theaters are probably pretty likely to hire you. Daycares and nursing homes require certifications.

    Good luck.
