Can a 17 year old start building his credit history in california?

can he start by applying for a credit card under his name and start building his credit history from there?

Nope, I had a debit card when I turned 16 and got a job, I thought that was building my credit, turns out having a debit card has no effect ! Once your 18 you can start to build credit but make sure not to go overboard.

You can try applying for a student credit card but most of the time you have to be 18 to get one.

Nope, not until he's 18.....there has to be a line somewhere.

Earning money and building credit are two very different things. You can get a job at 16 but not a credit card!
