My girlfriends 17 yr old son got in some trouble and had his hearing today. He plead guilty to the charge and in return avoided being sent away. They put him on 2 years supervised probation and stated that he must drop out of high school(he will be a jr this yr) and take the GED. Which he must wait for his class to graduate in order to take the test. Is this possibly correct? I mean i would think it would be mandatory to stay in school not the complete opposite. Has anyone heard of such a thing and how does that help the person rehabilitate or learn anything?

  1. Might have something to do with his selection of friends and curtailing his social life.

Sign him up for on-line high school, since he's going to be spending some time at home.  If he has his diploma by other means at the end of his probation, he won't have to take the GED and it will make him look good.

If no online school, teach him to use the library.  There is more than one way to get an education!  HE is the only one who can "deprive" him of this opportunity.

Though it isn't the usual adjudication, I have heard of it before.

  2. I had a neighbor girl get expelled from h.s. she was told to wait until she was 18 or her class had graduated to go for her g.e.d. .. but also she had no connection with the courts just attendance issues ..........I always thought that a court would mandate graduation and attendance compliance, not tell someone to drop out, but yes it is common to have to wait til 18 or that your class has graduated.......you could encourage the youth to prepare for when the time comes, then they will pass easily

  3. what was the reason given? did the charge have anything to do with behavior while in or around school?

I think there is a lot more to the story then you are letting on.

In any case, why are you so set against him actually applying himself to his education for 2 years?

You can certainly clear this up and get a better understanding from the caseworker assigned to him.
