  1. i wouldnt know but good luck finding out maybe it is good i just wish i could go hunting

  2. Definitely.  One of my daughters is left handed and likes levers so I bought her 300 Savage.  Now all my birthday and christmas presents to her consist of ammunition; really simplifies my shopping list.  I just keep a list in my notebook of what calibers each of my six little shedemons shoot.  Lori and her 300 Savage have nailed deer, antelope, elk, moose, bear; and some really large dogs that were after her livestock.  It never ceases to amaze me that we humans are constanty trying to new and improve everything.  I like the 8mm Mauser round that Paul Mauser came up with for the German military shortly before 1900 and it still works to perfection to this day; as does the 30-06 from 1906; the 303 from before 1900; the 44 special; and the list goes on and on.  Viva la human race????  I would suspect that Winchester didn't manufacture a rifle chambered for the 300 Savage so it would be like Ford not recommending a Chevy pickup to haul firewood.

  3. Yes a 300 Savage can be used to kill a Elk it does not matter the brand name your still shooting a high caliber weapon.  Use a heavy grain bullet for a 100 to 200 yards 300 to 400 yard you would want to use a light weight bullet

  4. It can be but I consider it a little light for the job. It depends on how good a shot you are and how well you can hit a moving target. In 50+ years of shooting, I've never had any game stand still while I'm trying to shoot.  Limit your range to 150 m and use at least a 170 gr slug.

  5. you can use it for elk. here's a link to some ballistics

  6. NO, according to the Winchester Product Guide Booklet 2008 Issue..* They only recommend it for Whitetail, Antelope, Mule Deer, and Black Bear Only.* If anyone should know whether its acceptable for Elk or not acceptable, it would be Winchester.*

  7. the 30-30 has taken many elk in it's day, and the 300 savage is a superior cartridge to the 30-30.

That being said, most elk taken with the 30-30 were shot by guys who spent many months hunting deer in the woods, and were good at reading game trails and stalking close to the animals.  Basically, they succeeded with the 30-30 because they got CLOSE.

Same with the 300 savage, it will work just fine but you will have to get closer than the guy with the 30-06 or the guy with the 300 winmag.

And of course, putting the bullet in the vitals is what really determines how successful you are.

  8. as  long as you are confident about your shooting skills and use a heavier bullet some people buy a 460 weatherby magnum and flinch every time they shoot it some use a 300 savage and drop elk at 200 to 300 yards with no problem, the bottom line is,if you are comfortable with this rifle it will do the job

  9. 180-grain for elk.

  10. Most folks would consider it light these days, but if you control the range and use heavy bullets on broadside lung presentations, it should be okay. Lots of elk have been taken exactly that way over the years, and just because somebody killed an elk with a Howitzer doesn't mean it now takes a Howitzer to kill an elk! Get a good reloading manual like the Hornady or Speer from http://www.midwayUSA.com/ or their Google competitors, check the reloading tutorials if you haven't already, and use the top listed loads on 180 grain Nosler Partition bullets. As the old 300 Savage is not a modern high-power round, don't even consider any lighter bullets on elk, or any longshots. Good Luck! Regards, Larry.
