I'm not asking if a rifle that shoots a 45-70 can shoot a 458, but can you put the same bullet in a 45-70 case as in a .458, since the bullet diameter is .458 in both ..... If so could you load a trophy bonded bear claw or swift A frame in a 45-70 case. I read this info in a cabelas shooting catalog, but I could of miss understood the info. thx for your time

  1. Yes, they are both .458" bullets. The 458 Win case holds more powder and designed for modern much stronger rifles than many 45-70 rifles.

Yes, you can load the 458" Bearclaw in the 45-70 case BUT here is the technical part of a question to you. Is it rated for your gun?

Ruger No.1 absolutely it can be stoked up pretty high.

Marlin Guide gun NEGATIVE because of pointed bullets lined up in the tube magazine point to primer- Dangerous.

H&R Single shot? yes, but no so hot.

Springfield Trapdoor? yes, but very low pressure. A waste of the bullet.

    So, what gun?

  2. Same diameter so they'll work if you reload.  By and large the .458 Winchester Magnum bullets are heavier than the .45-70 bullets.  The lightest rounds I use in my .4-5-8 are the Federal 400 grain Premium Hunting Rounds.  Also 510 grain Federal Premium soft-points & Hornady 500 grain soft points.

  3. Yes, but 45-70 may not handle the bullets in the 500 grain range very well, and the expanding bullets are designed with the higher velocities in mind, so they won't set up so well at the lower velocity, though with something so big to begin with that may not matter too much, depending on what you're shooting at.
