Question:

Can a 9th grader take AP courses?

I'm going into 9th grade this year and I'm currently enrolled in Advanced classes. However, I've heard of students who have taken AP courses by the time they're in 10th grade. My school only has one AP course for 10th graders and the rest of the AP courses are for 11th and 12th graders.

So my question is Do all schools offer AP courses to their 9th graders or is it something that you would have to talk to your guidance counselor about? As far as my knowledge, I have not heard that anyone from my grade is taking AP courses.

Thanks

  1. I doubt your school would just let you take an AP course. I'm almost certain that you would have to prove that you can handle the advanced coursework. However, are you sure you even want to take AP classes so early? I didn't take any until 11th grade and the workload was close to unbearable. You should put some serious thought into it, you might want to see how you do in your advanced classes before you jump into something you weren't ready for.

  2. I think that many High School's do not offer any AP courses for Freshman, however the High School I am going to does offer one AP course for Freshman, AP Human Geography. The High School I am going to is no different than any other public High School, I guess [they] just decided to offer an AP course, I don't really know.

  3. I don't think schools allow 9th graders to take AP classes.  Some schools do let 10th graders though...

  4. i'm pretty sure you can't take AP classes at really any high school when you're still a freshman..

but you can still just take honor classes

    :]

  5. Ninth graders don't usually take AP classes because there are certain prerequisites that most ninth graders would not meet.

  6. Yes, 9th graders are allowed to take AP courses if your school have them.  My daughter, a 9th grader, is taking 2 AP classes: AP Biology and AP Human Geography.  She is also in the Magnet Program (Scholar Academy).  If she was not in the Magnet Program  (Scholar Academy) she could only take AP Human Geography.

I hope this answers your question. Great job wanting to achieve high!!!!! keep up the good work...

  7. So you've been taking AP classes in 7th, and 8th? Or do you mean you took like...proficiency/honors class in those grades? However, I doubt they offer AP classes to 9th graders. Even if you are getting straight A's in an advanced course that isn't AP, you don't really know what's coming to you. AP classes are 10times harder, with 10 times more of a workload than honors. I've been taking honors english in high school, and I didn't hand any of my work in and still manged to get a 99. But when I took an AP class, I got my *** handed to me. Most schools like to have students take a regular class like Global History in 9th grade, in which they get 100's in, before they move them to an AP history class, you know what I mean?
