I want to get betta fish to put in my bathroom. And I've seen some pictures of them in tanks that doesnt have a filter! So do they need filters?

And I want to get a black one and a white one. Yes i know you cant have the same s*x in the same tank... but i dont want a pregnant fish! so i was thinking on getting a half fish bowl. One for each! is that a good idea??

  1. Betta's don't like and usually can't handle strong currents. And they can breathe our air. But soft current filters are good for them, to keep the tank clean and keep them healthy. You can only keep female betta's together in large groups. Yeah, a half bowl would be fine, though I don't like them.

  2. yes

  3. No, they don't need a filter. You just have to clean the tank often, depending on the size. If you let the tank get dirty, your fish can get all kinds of sicknesses, like Pop-eye. My betta got pop-eye :(

  4. Bettas can live without filtration.

That being said, they CANNOT live in tiny bowls (less than a gallon) that are unheated or be exposed to huge temperature changes like those that occur in a bathroom. Think about it, when you take a shower the bathroom will get really warm but when it cools down again overnight or during the day, your bettas will be stressed by the huge temperature changes.

I suggest getting a 5 gallon tank, a heater, some good betta food, and then divide it, give each fish a nice soft plant to play/hide in. In a 5 gallon tank you should do 50% water once per week and then your fish will live long healthy lives.

  5. They don't need filters if you don't want them to live very long...  For them to achieve their normal life expectancy (around 5 years) in an unfiltered container, you should be doing daily water changes and keeping the water around 80*, whether that means keeping the room warm or getting a heater.  Fish bowls are death traps without such maintenance, especially for TROPICAL fish like Bettas.  Why not get a divided (tinted, please) 5 gallon tank with a filter and heater?  It will be much more enjoyable when you see the fish actually swimming.

  6. Yes, as long as you clean the bowl often. but a filter would work better.

  7. They can but they live better in a tank with lots of swimming room and a filter. Also Bettas are known for fighting each other so be careful when buying them and putting them together, I suggest getting 2 tanks that are about 5 gallons each so that they can have space to swim and don't fight each other.

  8. yes, they have the labyrinth organ which allows them to respire air from the surface of the tank.

  9. yeah as long as you clean the  as long as you clean the tank everyones and a while

  10. No they do not need a filter. I happen to own 5 males and 3 females and i have owned Bettas all my life. I have never had them in a tank or bowl with a filter and they have lived their entire life expecany (5 years) with out n e problem.

  11. ...Great he can see his final resting place all his life, I'm sure you'll flush him.

Yes a betta is one of the few fish that can live and thrive without a filter. It doesn't mean they wouldn't like it, but yes, he can thrive without one.

You can get little dividers, but I the area is so small once you do.

I would get one of those bowls that have the bamboo and rocks in them, they're not that big or expensive. The bamboo is fake too so it will not hurt your dog or cat.

  12. yes it is,

but you must make sure that it has enough room.

i use about a 1/2 gallon minumum for each fish.

as bettas do not eat or p**p as much, you do not need a filter

but make sure that you clean the tank often, say a 1/2 water change a week

    do not slack off

  13. Yes they'll survive
