  1. Of Course!

America welcomes all sorts of people, but some people might not welcome you as friendly as others but its not like its illegal or anything as long as you have your documents to enter the U.S. then find where you were meant to belong with the American Dream right next to you.

But Seriously to work or study you either need to have a green card or be an American Citizen

  2. To be a student in the U.S., you would first need to be accepted by a school that is authorized to accept foreign students. Depending on which type of school it is, you would then receive a SEVIS I-20 form as either an F-1 student or an M-1 student. There's a fee involved for the SEVIS form.

A Canadian citizenship would be exempt the visa requirement, but he/she would need to show the inspecting officer that he/she had sufficient funds to attend school in the U.S. without having to work. If you flew to the U.S., you'd need a passport. If you drove over a land border, you would need proof of citizenship, e.g., a passport or a birth certificate and a drivers license.

Working in the U.S. would be more challenging. You'd need an approved petition submitted by a company in the U.S. that needed your skills.

  3. A Canadian is allowed to enter the US for visits, tourism, but is strictly forbidden to work or attend school.  You would have to meet all the requirements and get the appropriate visa prior to entry.  Students are prohibited from working.  People on work visas are prohibited from attending school.  So figure out what you are doing first!

Students need to be accepted at a university, college, etc. first, then prove they have sufficient funds to pay for all of their school expenses, plus all of their living expenses, plus their transportation home upon completing or terminating studies.  A condition of issuing student visas is that you return home -- no exceptions, no excuses!

For a work visa, you must get hired by an employer who is willing and able to apply for your employment pass.  Unless you are a lettuce-picker or other agricultural worker, you'll need a university degree plus at least 2 years experience and special expertise.  The employer must prove there are no Americans qualified for the job.

  4. No problem. When you are accepted to a US school just contact the office at the school who handles international admissions and they will help you get an F-1 visa. This also allows you to work part time while going to school, get summer jobs and get one year of work experience after graduation. Longer if you are a science, technology, engineering or mathematics grad, to allow you to get an H-1B visa. After graduation, if you get a degree in certain areas, as a Canadian you can get a TN visa, good for a year but you can get as many of these as long as your intention is to not stay in the USA permanently. If you decide to stay in the USA, you get an H-1B visa while on a TN. Once you get an H-1B, your employer will apply for a green card for you.

If you do plan to return to Canada, then the TN is what you can use for almost as long as you want.
