Can a DVD-R be used to create a DVD that can be upconverted?

I have an HDTV with an upconverting DVD player. I am satisified with the quality of the DVD upconverted and like the fact that it automatically detects widescreen (16:9) formats. Can I use a DVD-R to record my high def programs in low def 16:9 to be upconverted like an off-the-shelf DVD?

  1. If your recording HD to a DVD-R then the answer is no. HD is a huge amount of data. Blueray standard discs are 25 + gigs as a regular DVD-R holds 4.7 gigs and Dual layer will hold 8.5. If your coping movies from the computer and putting them in a upconvert HD dvd player, that still works. I do the same all the time. Hope this helps you out.

  2. Yes.

Even though you're using a DVD-R or even +R, or +R DL, it's all the same.  The upconversion process is not dependent on the DVD, but rather on the DVD player.

So, as long as you've got a DVD player that upconverts, burn away.
