Question:

Can a Jersey- Holstein steer be used for beef?

If so how would the beef be? tender? or are they only good for veal!

  1. Yes, often dairy steers are raised and used for beef.  The meat is not usually as tender or with as much marbling as the 'beef' breeds, but unless you're a meat connoisseur, you probably won't notice much difference at all.  


  2. The best steaks I ever had came from a Holstein steer we raised.  We got compliments on the flavor from ranchers who did not know the breed. Very tasty!  Only drawback it takes almost three times the feed to put on weight on a dairy breed as compared to beef breed.  But for my own personal use it was well worth the extra time and expense.
