Question:

Can a Manager get promoted to Vice-President?

I work in a Fortune 500 company and currently serve as a manager. I recently applied for a Vice-President position, however many friends feel I will not be promoted because I have not served as a director. Have you heard of an individual being promoted straight from manager to VP?

  1. There is no reason you can't make the jump, but you'd have to be exceptional, or it would have to be a job not many people wanted.  For the company to do this would risk angering all the directors, whereas if they promoted one of the directors, its unlikely you'd get mad (and you could still apply for the open director position).  Still, its up to the people doing the hiring and they can pretty much do whatever they want.  Even if you don't get chosen for the spot its not a bad idea to apply.  It tells everyone you are ambitious and may make it easier next time you want a promotion.

  2. It will be a very lucky break if you get promoted as at VP. If there are other director level people applying for this position, they will certainly have an edge, but if you have demonstrated as an excellent manager with some great metrics to justify then you definetly stand a chance. Good luck.

  3. No.....served as directors first, and before that middle managment.  (also Fortune 500)
