  1. An emulator is just a piece of software written for one device (let's call it device A) that imitates the hardware functions of a different device (device B) so that software written for device B can be made to run on device A.

Normally, this only works if device A is a lot more powerful than device B - so you could have a N64 emulator for PS3, but not an XBOX 360 emulator for PS3!

I have no idea if there are any N64 emulators for PS3 or how you install one, but I've run things like NES and Sega Master System emulators on my old Dreamcast.

  2. An emulator is software that lets a device with higher processing power can play ROMS (games) of systems with lower processing power. A PS# is capable of emulating an N64, but I do not know of one at the moment. A hacked PSP is even capable of emulating an N64. (however, it is very slow)

  3. I've not heard of people running a N64 Rom on PS3, but I've heard about SNES/Sega Genesis on PS3. But in order to do that they needed to install a Linux OS (Such as um.. Yellow Dog Linux) to do so, so just some heads up for you.
