  1. yes, they can have another driver drive for the new team and he can drive for his current boss, or he can drive for himself and his team.  The problem is that if you are driving for the team you own, then you have a lot of obligations for personnel and limited  money coming in if you do not do well.

  2. duh micheal waltrip owns a team

  3. yes...alot of them have/do

  4. yes. you've got robby gordon, richard petty, tony stewart, dale earnhardt, alan kulwhicki.

  5. Yes a lot of them have done it and a lot of them are doing it right now.

  6. yes   look at Richard Retty and Dale Sr.  They did it. And Stewart will be joining that list here shortly

  7. Why not?

    Ricky Rudd

    Bill Elliott

    Robby Gordon

    Michael Waltrip

    Dale Earnhardt Sr.

    Dale Earnhardt Jr.

    Jeff Gordon

    Kevin Harvick

    Richard Petty

    Tony Stewart

    Ken Schrader

etc all have done this or are currently doing this or are going to do this

  8. Technically yes.  As some other answers show, Richard Petty did it, Mike Waltrip is doing it, and Smoke will do it.  (I'm not including Jeff Gordon, because he's a partial owner of a car.  Its still HMS) However, watching Waltrip, it appears that he should choose either to race or to own.  In today's world, with all the demads on owner; not to mention drivers it appears to be impossible to be successful at both.

  9. yes, Lee and Richard Petty did, Tony Stewart will, Mike Waltrip does

  10. YES, but in today's NASCAR only Tony will be able to win a Championship as owner/driver!

  11. Absolutely.  Dale Earnhardt Sr still raced for RCR before his untimely death in 2001, but he owned DEI which fielded cars in the Cup series.  Alan Kulwicki won a championship in 1992 as an owner/driver, Darrell Waltrip owned his own race teams for several years, and currently Robby Gordon and Michael Waltrip are owners for team they drive for, and Jeff Gordon is 50% owner of the #48.  Then there are several drivers who own teams in the Nationwide and Truck series such as Dale Earnhardt Jr (#88 Navy), Kevin Harvick (2 Truck teams, 1 full time Nationwide team), and Michael Waltrip (#99 Aarons)

  12. yes. I think Stewart learned a great deal from JGR. His sprint car teams have been successful. I think he will be the first driver/owner to have wins and contend for a championship. It might not happen till 2010, but it will happen.

    (yeah, I'm a stewart fan).

  13. Oh yes lots of them do.  Mikey Waltrip,  Dale Sr. owned his own team and raced for Richard Childress for years.

  14. Yep, that is what Stewart is doing, and Gordon owns JJs car.

Michal Waltrip owns Michal Waltrip racing, and he races for that.

  15. Yes! Mikey Waltrip does and next year Tony Stewart will!

  16. They can still race and win the cup too.  Look at Alan Kulwicki.  He was owner/driver and won the cup in 1992.

Also Robbie Gordon who races now.
