Can a Rose Hair Tarantula Kill or harm a dog?

I have one, who snuck out of the cage and my dog ended up finding it. Nothing happened because I got to her in time. But I was just wondering if my spider did bite my pitbull could she harm him in anyway? I already read about if a human got bite it's no worse than a bee sting but what about pets?

Thanks for the help

  1. I'm completely with Jenna on this one. The urticating hairs (found on the abdomen) are the main concern. I would only add, that you get 2 aquarium lid clamps (available from any pet store) to avoid any future escapes. I'd be more concerned about the spider falling and rupturing its' abdomen.

Good luck with your spidey. :)

  2. ewhhhh! those are the most disguesting things to walk the earth Dx

haha, sorry, you probably didnt want to hear that, but i'm scared to death of spiders :P

    uhmm, google it maybe?

  3. Only if she chokes on the silly thing.  The bite is not dangerous in terms of toxin, but local infection is always a risk.  The biggest problem is likely to occur is she tries to eat it.  The hairs on tarantulas, not to mention the crunchy spider bits, can be enormously irritating; the dog is likely to throw up long before getting the thing down.  But it's also large enough to choke a small to medium dog in the wrong circumstances.

  4. Depends on whether or not your pet has an allergic reaction to it.. With rose hairs though, the urticating hairs are a lot bigger issue..

If they get them in the eyes, it can be pretty painful. One of my cats knocked over my rose hairs enclosure and ended up getting 'haired' right in the face. That poor cat hid in the dark for two days after that because of his eyes.
