  1. Under Singaporean law, an individual who automatically acquires Singaporean citizenship at birth retains that status even after acquiring U.S. citizenship. Singapore does not recognize dual nationality beyond the age of 21.

The Enlistment Act of Singapore stipulates that all male Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are liable for National Service (NS) upon reaching 16 ½ years old.  A dual citizen who holds both U.S. and Singapore citizenship is also subject to this law. Males may not renounce Singaporean citizenship until after completing at least two years of military service. Individuals who may be affected by this law should contact the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoint Authority for details.

The prohibition of dual citizenship is a contentious issue in Singapore. As the economy has become more global and Singaporeans have become more mobile, many Singaporeans have acquired foreign citizenships and reluctantly renounced their Singaporean citizenships even though they may feel a strong emotional attachment to Singapore. Foreigners who have been resident in Singapore for long periods and qualify for Singaporean citizenships are reluctant to naturalise as it would mean giving up citizenship of their native countries. Those who are dual citizens at birth may find it unjust that they are denied their birthright to citizenship of other countries where they were born or that of their parents. Male dual citizens are also not allowed to renounce Singaporean citizenship after the age of 11 and before attaining majority at the age of 21, such that they have to serve National Service at the age of 18 for a country to whom allegiance they may almost immediately abjure.[7]

The government's rationale for not allowing dual citizenship is that Singapore is a young and vulnerable nation which cannot afford to allow its citizens multiple allegiances which may be compromised in times of national crisis. Citizens without a second citizenship may feel aggrieved if dual citizens enjoy the benefits of citizenship during periods of wealth but leave the country in trying times.[8] Furthermore, as Singapore is a country that mandates military service for males, dual citizenship would be an avenue for citizens to avoid conscription. Nevertheless, the government is open to the possibility of allowing dual citizenship if local and global circumstances demand so.

  3. Singapore does not allow dual citizenship. The government may take action to deprive a Singapore citizen of his/her citizenship if he/she has acquired the citizenship of another country or has applied for or used a foreign passport as a travel document. A Singapore citizen may also be deprived of his/her citizenship if he/she has been ordinarily resident outside Singapore for a continuous period of 10 years and during the period has not returned to Singapore with a valid travel document issued by the Singapore authorities. If your child is born overseas, he/she may have dual citizenship, for example, the child acquires the citizenship of the country where he/she was born by virtue of his/her birth in the country, and is also a minor citizen of

Singapore. In such cases, before the child turns 21 years of age, he/she has to decide whether to remain a Singapore citizen. If he/she chooses to retain Singapore citizenship, he/she must take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty when he/she turns 21 and before attaining 22 years of age. This oath can be taken at the nearest Singapore overseas mission or with

permission of SIR, at a Notary Public.
