I heard from a friend that a Smoothback Turtle can outrun a man on flat ground, but of course, being the computer geek that I am, I had to see for myself...

Yes it can, I believe it was proven on myth busters a while back.

The smoothback turtle is one of the fastest reptiles on the planet, full grown smoothbacks have been known to out run dogs.
