  4. No you wouldn't.

    The driving laws down here have changed. You can't drive on your own without a fully licenced driver with you and a learner can't drive on a motorway regardless.

  5. No, A UK learner driver can't drive on ANY road in the Republic of Ireland. You need a FULL licence from another country or an IRISH learner permit (new name for a provisional licence) to drive supervised.

    This would apply whether you were accompanied or not.

    This even applies over the North/South divide. I have an Irish Learner Permit for a motorbike, but because it isn't a full licence, I can't cross the border with the North (I even have to get the bus to Derry) or I'd be prosecuted in the Northern Irish courts.

    The same works the other way round too.

  7. No and neither can an Irish learn driver.  Unlike in the UK when Irish drivers pass their test they can drive on the motorway straight away but not until you pass your test.

    There have been new laws put in place which allowed Irish learners on their 2nd provisional to drive unaccompanied and while the Gardi have said they won't be 'specifically looking for learners' if you had an accident on the motorway as a learner your insurance would be invalidated.

    to be sure, you'd prob be best to contact the RSA (road safety authority) http://www.rsa.ie/ and ask them. Theyll know better than anyone.

    If you arent allowed on motorways, you could still drive to waterford im sure. You'd prob have to go through a lot of small towns and windy roads, but it would def be more scenic than being on the motorway. Check google maps :)

    And when your in waterford , be sure to visit Dunmore East..its very pretty esp if the weather is nice.

  9. Technically you can't drive on the short stretch of motorway you'd be on between Belfast and Dublin and between Dublin and the turn-off to Carlow and Waterford. There aren't many motorways in Ireland, and you can always take the secondary roads instead.

    And it'll take more than six hours .... I suggest taking the train to Dublin, then taking the LUAS across to Heuston Station and then taking the train to Waterford. Much more pleasant.

    And you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT learn to drive on motorways in Ireland. No L-drivers allowed!
