I can register it at a friend's house, and would let him drive the car when I am not using it. Also, what documentation is required to get insurance in Canada?

  1. I'm not an expert on this, but I would suggest you take a tour here, there are expert's tips over there.http://car-insurance.easyideas4u.info/ca...

  2. If you do not have a residence, such as a vacation home or condo, in Canada, you cannot register and insure a vehicle in Canada.  You cannot use a friend's house as an address because it isn't your address.  You have to have a verifiable address, like a condo with land title in your name and property tax receipt, a cabin registered at land titles in your name, property tax in your name, or a vacation trailer in a summer camp, site rental in your name, receipt for payment in your name.
