I am a US passport holder. I am currently in China with only a single entry visa that was already used for this trip. I am planning to visit Hong Kong. However, after visiting Hong Kong, I want go and visit China again. My question is since my single entry visa was already used, can I apply for a Chinese "L" (tourist) visa again in Hong Kong to go to China?

I am asking this because I'm confused since the travel.state.gov states that: "There are Chinese consulates general in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Americans traveling in Asia have been able to obtain visas to enter China from the Chinese visa office in Hong Kong and the Embassy of China in Seoul, South Korea.".......

and that the website of the China Visa office in Hong Kong states that: "you are required to apply Chinese visa from the Embassy or Consulate-General of Peoples' Republic of China in your resident country."on the http://www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/eng/zgqz/bgfwxx/default.htm

  1. Normally there would be no problem, but you'd better check.  PR China has really tightened up its rules while the Olympics are going on.  They do not issue mulitiple entry visas during the games, for one thing.

There might be a rule that you must return to your own country for a new visitor visa once you have used one up already.

The fact that you have a US passport is not a relevant factor--the Chinese government has tightened up for everyone--for fear of the Olympics being disrupted by protests.

  2. i know most guys do in this way

  3. Yes, you can. Of course you have to pay, and if you want expedited service you have to pay for that too. Oh wait--in May when I went there was no same day service, so forget that.

Last time I tried to get a new L visa I had to show proof of where I was staying--like a confirmation that I'd made hotel reservations. If you are staying w friends/family you have  to show some sort of invitation letter.

It did not use to be this way, but it was changed recently bc of the Olympics. Just be prepared to be frustrated.
