  1. Firstly to be a Paramedic or Ambulance officer in Australia you will need an Australian Citizenship than you will have to apply to the Ambulance service in the state that you are living in if successful you will have to be retrained to our standards Australian standards for Ambulance officers is extremely high, much higher than American standards, and that is not a put down that is just the way it is, the positions vacant are lower than the amount of people wanting the position therefore it is very hard to get a start in the Ambulance service. But don't be put off and apply for the position and see what happens once you are in you will stay in, usually some one has to retire or die before they leave

  2. They are yelling loudly for all types of medically trained staff over here.  It may help to contact a few hospitals and see who has gone before you and find out all the forms etc you will need to fill out.  You will get a working visa first I think, then you get citizenship after a few years.  You will more than likely be here before you know it.  The major hoop is that you will be employed over here, and that won't be a problem.   My only help is best wishes I am afraid.

  3. The one thing I would add... is that you DO NOT need to become an Australian citizen.

As has previously been mentioned, please do get some facts before you start burning bridges.  I would suggest you contact one of the ambulance services directly, as they may be in a position to sponsor your "transfer".

The only positions where citizenship is mandatory is a Government job (go figure).  Private employers will not mandate that you become a citizen.  Like a lot of other countries, you can apply for "permanent residency", which will allow you to travel in and out of the country on your American passport.  Being that some of our health scheme is quasi-Government, you may find that some professions do require citizenship; but that's something to contemplate at a later stage.  For example, to get a job with the Victorian Ambulance Service, you don't need to be a citizen; however, you do need to hold a Visa with "unrestricted work rights".

But as previously mentioned, do seek professional help.  Emigrating to any country is a bit of a paper-trail nightmare.  And nothing's for free.

    Good luck.

I hope everything works out for you.

  4. Yes of course you can, like a lot of other skills that Australia is short of, medics are in demand so finding a job should not be a problem. There are a number of steps you have to go through and it is advisable to talk to a migration agent who is a trained and registered legal professional who knows what you have to do.

First step is you will need to have all your qualifications assessed against Australian standards. Then you can decide if you wish to apply for a permanent or temporary visa. Both types have their advantages and disadvantages so that it why it is important to get professional legal advice. Once you decide then you can look for suitable employers.

There is a lot more involved than this short summary so get advice before you make a move as the visa process can be expensive.

You may find some links here that would be of interest . although we are very short of paramedics here and I read an article just the other day about a Englishman who came over and is now one of our paramedics but they have made a mess up with what he was told about citizenship and now it is un certain that he can stay . So I would say could be a lengthy proceedure and perserverence

but if you are determined you may get through and become a paramedic here.

  7. Hello. I went and make a phone call and yes you can. They might just put you through a few courses but that is about it. They said you will get on straight away as most of them are working double and triple time at the moment. They are on between $25 to $35 a hour depending on what shift. Hope that helps. Take care. Good Luck...
