Can a VHS tape be de-magnatized?

If a VHS tape is on top of a speaker, can it be demagnetized, effecting the picture when played?

  1. Sure can, if the field is strong enough. But remember Coulomb's law. it is a exponential factor of field strength to distance.


  2. Yup, It is actually rust that is on the video tapes.  Seems unusual but in a sense that is all it is and if you put a magnet (not a fridge magnet something a little more powerful) they will erase the tape.

  3. Yes it is possible.  After all it is a magnetic field that first put the information onto the VHS tape so any other magnet can affect what is stored on the tape.  Also, if this is what has happened to your tape, it is permanent.  You can't reverse it.

  4. Sure can......there are magnets in speakers that erase the items on the tape
