I have a very young 11 inch high Gala apple tree growing in a warm climate. If I were to relocate to Maine would it survive there in the ground?

I don't see how under 3 or 4 feet of snow it would survive, but I need someones advice who really does know.

Thank you.

Also, At what height/age can i expect it to start branching out? It only has a vertical stalk right now with no arms, will they come naturally or do I need to trim something off to get them to grow? Thanks very much.

  1. i live in Maine , and have a Gala apple tree in my yard and it last the winters here, and no you don't have to trim it to make the branches grow , they will grow on their own when the tree gets bigger

  2. Keep it in a pot until you feel it's gotten a little more mature.  It can't hurt!!!  Leave it out side during the warmer months and bring it inside for the winter.

But....I will tell you this - if you bury it correctly and deep enough and plant it at the appropriate time (check with the area when it's best to plant trees) it should be just fine.

I wish we had cold snowy winters!!!

  3. I don't know about a Gala apple tree specifically, but I know other types of apple trees thrive in Maine. I lived there for 3 years, and dated a man that grew up in the very northwest of Maine, in the mountains. There was snow on the ground from about mid-september until mid-may. I even saw it snow in July, once. It got so cold that you'd change your mind about moving if I told you. (Don't get me wrong- the place was an absolute paradise of natural beauty)

They had a whole acre of apple trees in their front yard, and I've never seen apple trees produce like that in my life. They were big, beautiful and healthy, and the snow didn't seem to bother them at all. If apple trees can flourish like that in the coldest part of the state, I can't imagine that your tree would do any worse. Good luck, and good choice in Maine! I miss it every day.
