Question:

Can a bank actually do this?

So I went in to cash a check today and the teller told me I couldn't cash it without paying 32.00 in overdraft fees. I was a little confused about it and she spent about 20 minutes looking up in all of my past statements and everything to see when I'd overdrawn... It happened January 15, 2005. THREE YEARS AGO.... and 47 cents!

So three years ago I was 47 cents over drawn and nothing ever happened. I wasn't notified (although they claim that they "probably sent" me something) I've continued to use this bank regularly the past three years, contacting them about my change of addresses, getting monthly statements, and even getting new bank cards.

I talked to a manager and more than one person at the customer service line. No one can do anything. I know 32.00 isn't a lot at all but it just seems a little ridiculous that three years ago something happened and now I'm paying for it!

Can they actually do that????

  1. You've only gone to the bank once in 3 yrs?  You probably don't have any money in the account.  Say goodbye and open an account elsewhere.

  2. Well.. banks can do anything they want. they have your money.   IT does seem a little odd that it happened 3 years ago and they are just now charging you this fee...  You should ask them why didnt they charge you that fee 3 years ago?  and challenge it.  tell them you want a copy of something they 'probably' sent you...  and make sure you ask them why they didn't charge you 3 years ago.  It has to be a mistake... thats just crazy. usually a bank is ontop of anything they can charge you extra money for. and I mean ontop of it. like one time my ex was a dollar overdrawn one dollar... and we heard about it the next day. and it cost us 100 dollars.  Make sure you tell them you want EVERYTHING related to this on paper. and that you are disputing the charge.  and then close your account.  Usually when I threaten to close my account at a bank they are a bit more helpful. but that could just be my luck.

  3. In general,The Banks r surviving on such charges /fees.

Normally depending on the quantum of amount they must hv charged that fee ie., '' Discounting charges.''

  4. Call customer service and ask them to waive the fee. It worked for me just today!
