  1. If that is what is said in the " agreement " little paper they give(send) you, then YES they can.  Different banks do it differently, they are required to tell you by publication.

To verify your situation, you might want to go in or call your local bank, you could even ask you to send you that little folder that explains it.

You want to be sure and know what your bank's procedures are.  Otherwise you could write bad checks or overdraw your account with a debit card.  When figuring if the money you want to consider weekends and bank holidays, and be sure not to count those days.  Banks are usually talking about " banking days " ( which the weekends and holidays are NOT )

I get two checks consistently, I have them direct deposited and they are not " good " until about 4 days after they have been electronically deposited.

  3. Yes they can. They might have reviewed the checks at the end of the day and decided to place a hold or the teller just didn't have time. However, there is only a certain time that they can hold them depending on the routing number and the amount of the checks. The bank can also look at your banking habits.  I believe it is Reg. CC that will tell you how long a check can be held.
