The matchstick did not have the head on it and the match was not used. The size was about 1 inch.

  1. Normally, a bird will just tear up the paper or cardboard and does not injest it.  However, younger birds have been known to eat paper towels, wood shavings and anything they are near.  It can easily kill them if they get enough of it.  If it was such a small piece of cardboard, it may go through the digestive system without problem.  Watch the bird closely, and if you have any doubts about whether or not he is ill, take him to the vet.It should get through the crop ok, I'm questioning how well it will do in the gizzard.  If it gets past that, it should be ok.
