Question:

Can a bird in a cage be happy?

I like canaries, but I really don't want to limit a bird's freedom, unless I'm absolutely certain that he's perfectly happy... Any thoughts?

  1. um.. well my dad used to have some pet birds when he was little and he never kept them in  cage cos they never flew away and he let them fly freely outside and when he whistled it came back, same with my uncle he keeps pigeons for racing so he lets them out to fly for 1 hour each day and when he whistles they all fly back, i think to get them to do that, feed it for one week in a cage then don't feed it one day and let it out, it might fly back becos it knows that food is waiting

would u be happy living in a box?

  2. my bird(a parakeet) didn't seem his cage that much but we did take him out a lot and sometimes leave his cage door open. so probably just take she/he out more they probably won't mind.

    hope this helps!

    :D

  3. When considering a pet bird I think it's important for any bird owner to purchase a handbook (available at pet or book stores) that will tell all they need to know about their pet, training, feeding, etc.   We've had Parakeets for 8 years and yes, they are happy birds.  Some people never let their birds out of the cage, while others do.   Which birds are happier? We allow ours time out of the cage (indoors of course and in an area where there is nothing that can cause them harm)  and let them fly.  They don't like being in their cage all the time, yes, they are comfortable enough, but they get restless and  need exercise  and it's their nature to fly, they like attention as well...I honestly believe time out of the cage now and then makes for happier, healthier birds.  I think it's important to mention that some pet stores clip birds wings, while others do not.  They can fly when clipped, but not very well...the feathers will eventually grow back and they will fly normal if you choose to allow it..

  4. Yes, two canaries can live very happily together in a cage that allows them space to hop, play and flutter around. However, if the cage is too small they can feel cramped.

You can let canaries out of their cage for short periods of time each day, if you like, but it isn't as necessary to make the bird(s) happy, unlike other pet birds (specifically hookbills).

The exercise and freedom is good for their health, but they must be supervised. The doors must be closed and curtains drawn (because most canaries don't understand the concept of windows). Other pets must be out of the way.

  5. no

birds are meant to be in the sky.

would you be happy living in a box?

  6. Birds do like the safety of their cage. Several of ours have escaped only to return a few hours later, happy to be home. If you give your bird a large cage [ as large as is practical ], plenty of toys and put him/her outside for a change of scenery, a cage will be a wonderful, safe haven for your precious pet.

  7. yes, as long as it has things it needs, food, water, company, toys etc.

they dnt know anything else but to live in a cage

  8. Let me put it this way.

The reason why birds fly loads and loads in the wild is because their food, water, mates, shelter and other miscellaneous birdy stuff is scattered across a huge area and the bird has to fly miles and miles everyday just to SURVIVE.

Now, if you take all of that, combine them together and keep them all within a certain enclosed area so they dont have to do ALL that travelling, give them love and attention AND remove all their natural predators, don't you think the little feathered terror will be happy? :)

The key to a happy, caged bird is to ensure that your bird gets enough exercise and stimulation along with all its dietary needs, which is what most owners forget.

h**l, i have two parrots that rarely ever flew when they were unclipped simply because they never had a need to. One even prefers his cage to the scariness of our living room! So don't feel guilty about keeping your bird in a cage so long as you let him out for a few hours each day! :)

  9. will you be happy if you were locked in a prison?

  10. Hello.

I know birds should be in the sky . However, the birds are domestic breed , are used to be in the cages , without cages , food & water, they will feel at lost . If you buy a canary from a pet store or from a breeder, and give it a cage large enough for it to be in , fresh water everyday, plenty of seed to eat ...Yes, ofcourse it can be happy. I have a canary male , when I was in the hospital for almost a month , no one feed it or give water , when I came back home from hospital , it still was alive and sang beautiful ( His songs were the only thing that help remind me that he was there , so I gave him seed and water , I was so sick and because the medicine , I forgot that I had a pet . He lived to be almost 14 years and he just passed away 2 weeks ago . ) So, Yeah, the birds can be happy living in the cage.

If you don't know how to find a breeder to buy from, go to www.hoobly.com to find one near you. TM.
