Can a bonus be considered a raise by employer?

Haven't had a raise in about 10 years and my boss considers annual bonus a raise which have not been consistently the same each year.

  1. Bonuses are not raises. Many benefits (life insurance, 401K contributions, pension, etc.) are based on base salary. Your boss is keeping costs down by holding down your base salary. Also a raise increases your guaranteed base salary. And a raise on top of a raise compounds that. Your boss is a cad and a liar.


  2. You're not entitled to a raise or a bonus, so quit complaining as most of us don't get either.

  4. You're arguing over semantics.  If you want a raise, ask for it.

  5. Your boss is a moron, a raise is an increase in salary, a bonus is a single payment.  If your paycheck didn't increase it is a bonus not a raise.
