I just adopted a bunny and my dad will only let it live in the garage. Is that okay? I live in Colorado on Orchard mesa. I am afraid it may get too hot or too cold in there! It is a male rabbit that is one year old and has fairly short hair. He is living in a good sized cage with soft finely shreded up paper stuff that also has a little ramp that goes up to a liitle spot above the rest so he can hide under that too. Please help me! If it will kill him to Live out there (please let me know) I may be able to convince my dad about letting me keep him in the house! Thanks!

  1. No.  They can't tolerate temperature extremes well, plus the car fumes will build up in their system and eventually kill them due to liver and kidney failure.  Temperatures over 80 degrees will stress your rabbit, and over 85 degrees can cause them to have heat stroke and potentially die.  If you're dad's reluctant to have him in the house, have him take a look at "House Rabbits 101" and the different FAQs that are linked at the top of this page: http://www.rabbit.org/  They are actually quite clean animals, can be trained to use a litter box, and if you keep the litter changed daily or every other day, I think they smell less than cats do!  Good luck!

  2. yes as long as you know that the rabbit knows where the food and water is. but don't just put him in there play with him every once in a while.

  3. Most rabbits CANNOT handle too much warm weather. As long as your garage has nothing harmful (pointy object, tires etcetra) because rabbits nibble on everything they see. Including cars, if any drip of gasoline it might kill him. If you garage is empty with nothing harmful and fairly cold, he can live there.

Most likely you might have cars there, so if you do, convince your dad into getting him a cage and be inside the house.

Other than that, rabbits need lots of extra space and exercises to be able to be happy.

  4. first off,do not listen to people who says yes.rabbits should never live in a garage under any circumstnaces.this is not hygienic for the rabbits' health.

yes,it's better to keep him inside the house.this is better for your rabbit as this increases the life span of a rabbit(outside-homed rabbit lives less longer.average life span cut-off is 5 years).you just have to convince your dad to let you have it in the house.

NEVER let animals live in the garage.no animals must be kept in any garage.

    i hope i helped!

  5. Yes, that's just fine, I also live in Colorado, and I have similar problems with my parents!

If your garage isn't heated and it gets below 15 degrees in there during the winter then you should bring him inside, or he may die.

As long as you leave your garage door open, or it has windows, during the summer, your bunny should get plenty of light, but if it doesn't, consider building or buying a hutch, to leave him in.

My rabbits used to come into the garage during the winter, but but my little baby Holliee, has to stay out this winter, so my dad is adding another cubby to the hide-way, then putting insulation, and possibly a heating blanket, and putting her hutch next to a heat vent, and if it gets below freezing, I'll bring her in.

This is a method you should consider, I know how Colorado weather is!

    Lol
