Question:

Can a business use our tip money?

Alright so my question is simple, i work at a place where we get tips, and is it alright for the business to take our tips to pay for things. example: we had to replace our locks and they used the tip money to pay for it. example2: we accepted a counterfeit 20 dollar bill without knowing till later on, and the business used our tip money to replace the $20 they lost from the counterfeit.

Is this alright/legal? should I be concerned?

thanks.

  1. i think it is legal for them to deduct funds from your tips to pay for a mistake one of you made but if it wasn't any or you're faults that the lock was broken then i think they are doing wrong. Something about misleading customers, because they give tip money expecting that it will be given to the waitresses or whatever.

  2. I would check with the labor board. Just call and check with them if they are allowed to do that.

Why did the locks have to be replaced? What locks were they?

If they were door locks then the company you work for should have paid for it. It is their responsibility not yours.

As for the twenty that was counterfeit, Who took the cash? You can not take money out of everyone else's pocket unless you can prove who made the mistake.

Sounds to me like whoever you are working for is cheap and does not practice very responsible business practices. I would be looking for a new job.

Tips are not the companies slush fund for whatever they loose or need to replace.
