  1. They can be used, but not perfectly. While many camcorders offer the still picture function, they really don't compare to a digital 'still camera'.

don't be fooled by megapixles, it's a very vague way of measuring the quality of a picture. video camera lenses are not built for taking still pictures.

So you have to decide if you want a good video camera that takes average still photos, or a good still camera that takes even more average video.

if it's the later, then definitely invest in a decent still camera. SLR's are the best, but you are looking at around $1000 to start.

  2. In my experience, no. Even with an HD quality cam, the screen caps aren't going to match even a 2 or 3 megapixel digital pic.

If you spend enough money. Over $1200 the last time I looked, you can get a camcorder with build in 5 or 6 mp still, but the shutter speed is horrible and the pics are often blurry.

If you're looking for still and video, but a nice digital cam that takes mpgs or avi's and buy a big memory card.

  3. As long as the camcorder has the ability to take freeze frame shots then yes.  Quality depends on camera and how shot is taken.

  4. camcorders take video and stills, the stills are not that great, check the mp on the camcorders, the digital cameras take good stills and video, the video usually isn't as good as a camcorder, but my canon A570IS takes some pretty good mini movies.
