Can a canadian buy and run a business in the U.S?

My boyfreind wants to buy some businesses in the U.S. We are currently living in canada. Is it legal for him to buy these businesses, run them, and live there? are there certain permits he may need to do this?

  1. You can buy stock in a US C-Corporation.

    If a foreigner bought stock in an S-Corporation, it would lose it's S-Corp status with the IRS.

Yes, but I don't know the legalities involved.  Many foreign companies own businesses in the US.  You guys should buy commercial properties in Vegas.  Even with the exonomy tanking out here,  Vegas reinvents itself every 10 years and always prevails.  Especially the area around the University and Airport which is only a few miles from the strip casinos.  With the value of the dollar, you will do well.  Another boom is predicted in Vegas within the next five years so now is the time to grab any commerical property you can get your hands on.

You are asking several questions.  First you have to know what kind of business he is looking to buy, develop or incorporate.  Then you have to know the jurisdiction (State, County, City) to determine what permits, licenses, disclosures or other gov filings will be required.  As far as living where he is doing business somewhere in the US, that too depends on several things, his background, criminal history and finances. Immagration status.
