Question:

Can a catalytic converter change the amount of carbon dioxide produced per gallon of gasoline?

This is a question that was asked as part of a chemistry assignment of mine, and I can't find the answer anywhere else...could someone help me?

  1. Not the ones we use now.  They reduce carbon monoxide (by changing it to carbon dioxide), hydrocarbons (by changing them to water and carbon dioxide) and nitrogen oxides.  They don't have any effect on carbon dioxide.

    People are trying to figure out if we can make one that does, but it seems very hard.  Probably easier to run cars on something other than fossil fuels.


  2. They change CO (Carbon MONOxide) to CO2 (Carbon Dioxide, an "Inert" gas by passing the spent exhuast fumes over "Platinum Pellets" in a catalytic converter, it's a "Catalyst" on the exhaust of the car.

  3. A catalytic converter causes partially burned hydrocarbons that are being released to be further burned. It is way passed the area of the engine that is involved in making the car go forward. Actually, more CO and CO2 would be caused.
