I want to work with the British Heart Foundation, but here's the thing: I have literally, £26 to my name. I've got interviews coming up for jobs, but I just can't sit around the house anymore. Could I claim my expenses (bus fares) back from the BHF?

  1. No, but you might be able to claim them off your taxes.

  2. It totally depends on the organization. I worked for a children's hospital that paid for parking and bus for its volunteers. But, I've volunteered at many other places that didn't pay for bus/transportation.

My guess is that unless they tell you initially that they're going to pay for your bus to and from there, the answer is no. I wouldn't ask - they'll tell you if that's one of the "perks" of volunteering.

  3. I don't know about the U.K. but in the U.S. transportation costs (bus fare, gasoline, mileage on your vehicle, etc.) incurred while volunteering are tax deductible as a donation to charity.
