Our son is not getting the education he needs in 6th grade Science. First semester was great with a teacher that really wanted the students to learn. Now the regular teacher is back from maternity leave and she tends to fail the majority of her class. Grades as well as tests are based on symantics. While she continues to teach 6th grade science and public school employes her, we want our son to have an enjoyable education and NOT lose his passion for Science because of one bad teacher. Can we homeschool just one 6th grade Science class while he takes a study hall in place of the public school Science class? What is Indiana State Law?

  1. Parents are supposed to teach their children, teachers are there to supplement what was taught by the parents. Not the other way around despite what the law may sound like. Nobody can stop you from teaching your child at home in any subject even if he is going to school.  As far as  study hall is concerned you would have to take that up with his school counselor

  2. Why not look into getting a private tutor? Seriously, how are you better qualified to teach than the teacher. If you have sort of science degree and a teaching background you might be able to negotiate something with the system, otherwise it's all homeschool or none.

  3. Go here to read the laws on homeschooling in your state. http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp?St...

I am not from IN so I do not know if what you are considering is legal or not. Personally, if it were me, and this were the only teacher I were having trouble with, I would attempt to go thru all the "chain of command" first; the teacher, principal, superintendent of schools, school board, etc.

I would honestly try to see if there are any other parents having issues with this teacher, and if possible sit in on a class or two. I would want to stop this teacher from corrupting all of the students, and not just my own child. We all have a responsibility to all the children in the school system.

Good luck and I hope this helped.

  4. i cant say i live in indiana and know exactly but i have friends who are homeschooled and take classes at schools. I know its not the same but im sure you could (parents are primary educator right?) good luck

  5. Your question is a little confusing--it sounds like your son is attending public school, so I'm not sure what the private school has to do with it.

You would have to talk to the school about it, but it's not likely they will let you do that. They will not be impressed that you think their one teacher is bad. Most kids will have at least one teacher that is "bad", but they certainly wouldn't be allowed to 'skip class' just because they didn't like how the teacher taught. In 6th grade, it's unlikely his passion will die--especially if you get involved and make sure he does other science things of interest outside of school.

If you are registered in a public school, that's the contract you've signed for your child's education. That is where your child is to be educated UNLESS the school is willing to make other arrangements. They are under no legal obligation to do so and I have NEVER heard of a school allowing such a setup for just one course to not be done at school.
