My grand daughter is seven years old and has a reading and language impairment. While my daughter was in labor with her the doctors had discovered that the mothers blood type O positive was attacking the babies blood B negative. My grand daughter was jaundice for a while after she was born and stayed in the hospital for about two weeks. She is being she has been diagnosed with ADHD and is on Concerta. She doesn't sleep and meddles with everything. But she is excited about learning. She's a wiz at math, music, and art. Reading comes hard to her. She's still trying to sound out her words. I just came from an IEP meeting for her. So far the Hooked on Phonics DVD's are interesting to her and she's up to a C reading level. I need to bring her up to an E level. Any suggestions?

  1. I think they do affect children learning abilities and also autoimmune diseases also

  2. Actually the only blood problems that causes problems at birth are call Rh factors. If a mother is Rh negative and has the baby is positive, this will cause the mother's to develop anti-bodies against the baby's blood cells and then they will attack. This can cause brain damage or even death.

This only happens in the second child, not the first. During the birth of the first child, the antibodies form and then attack the second child.

This can cause learning disabilities or ADHD if treatment is delayed. However, genetics are the usual cause of learning disabilities. If you have other people in the family who suffer similarly, then it is possibly genetic.

Hooked on Phonics tends to be an auditory based program. If she does well with it, use it by all means. However,  many kids with learning disabilities do not attend very well to auditory information. If this is the case, try buying the book, McCraken Spelling Through Phonics. It has a see, read, write component which helps LD kids. I used it for 14 years with my LD kids and it was wonderful.
